The a2 Milk Company was founded in New Zealand by Dr Corran McLachlan and Howard Paterson after a profound discovery.
Corran learned that the reason some people may experience discomfort after drinking milk while others do not may be because of the proteins found in milk.
Ordinary cows produce milk with two types of beta-casein proteins, called A1 and A2 protein. The reason this was so profound is that people who experience discomfort from ordinary cows’ milk were able to enjoy the nutritional goodness of milk without the A1 protein and not experience any side effects.
Corran also worked out that, originally, all cows produced milk with only the A2 protein type and no A1. It was only over time that things changed.
So, armed with the knowledge that there were still some cows that naturally produced milk with only the A2 protein he went about finding a safe and simple way to identify them. Once he had done that, he could ensure that we could deliver pure milk, without any A1 protein at all, so that people experiencing discomfort from ordinary cows’ milk could once again enjoy the pleasure of natural cows’ milk.
And, from there, The a2 Milk Company was formed and the a2 Milk® was available for more people to enjoy.
